SEISTAN AND KAIN.
Some cases of anthrax annually appear in Seistan during the-
summer, and Seistan may to some extent be considered an endemic;
centre of the disease.
It is noteworthy that cases in human beings are almost unknown^
XI. Mines mines are systematically worked in Seistan and
Kain in the present day.
In former times there were copper mines in the Kainat, at Kalla
Zarri (Neh Bandan), Peshkaran (Kuh-i-Bakiran), Khaliran (Kuh-i-
Bakiran), and many other places.
The mine at Kalla Zarri is worked at the present day in an unsys
tematic fashion. The ore is twice roasted, the produce of the first
roasting (Qurs-i-veJc-Aba) being sold at 5 krans per man (2‘6 lbs.) and.
that of the second (Qurs-i-do-Aba) at 9 krans per man.
The ore is rich, seeming to be mostly bornite and atacamite.
Copper is sold in the Birjand bazar at the following rates
Krans per M&n.
Kain copper ingots 9
Manufactured vessels ... 14 to 25
Copper manufactured goods from Yezd sell at about the same rate.-
Copper plates recently imported via India sell at 13 krans per man..
There are no doubt deposits of other metallic ores in most of the
mountain ranges of Kain, but the absence of fuel and the scarcity of:
water are against their being worked successfully.
Deposits of coal are alleged to exist in the Kainat, but I have not
succeeded in obtaining a specimen, and am doubtful whether they
have any real existence.
Turquoises were formerly mined at Garageh in the south of the
Palang Koh range.
XII. Factories .—There are no factories properly so-called in Seistan
and Kain. The only local manufactures exported are bar ah, a fine
hand-woven woollen cloth made in Mod and other villages in Kain r
and carpets.
Bar ah sells at 20 to 60 krans per piece of pbout 10 yards, and is
mostly exported to Tehran.
“ Xomad ” carpets, cushion covers, saddle bags, &c., are woven in.
Seistan but not exported. The same remark applies to namdahs.
The carpet trade of the Kainat is of considerable importance.
The following interesting note pn the subject is by Mr. W. B. Howson
(Indian Telegraph Department)
“ The carpets manufactured in the Kainat are of two classes :—
“ Class I.—Those known as ‘ Baluch and Bahlili 5 which are made by
the Nomad tribes of the same names. They are invariably small rugs
of sombre colours (often with a ground of self-coloured camel wool) and
simple geometrical designs. Wool is used for both the warp and woof.
The looms are stretched over the ground.
From 2,COOL to 3,COOL worth of these carpets are manufactured
annually, the average price being about 37J krans (equivalent to 155 .)*
per square yard.
The carpets of this class are generally inferior to the ‘ Baluch ’
carpets of Turbat, but superior in point of durability to those of Seistan. .
