Notes to tables showing imports .—In the above tables tbe figures for 1907 -08
have been compiled from the tables in the trade report for that year.
The present year’s figures, as regards imports by the Nushki route and
imports from Afghanistan, have been compiled from the statistics supplied by
the Persian Customs Department and from a return of goods imported by post
which is kept at Koh-i-Malik Siah. Figures for importation by other routes,
i.e., Khorassan, Bandar Abbas, Kerman, Yezd, &c., have been compiled from
statistics kept at Nasratabadand Birjand.
The figures for the year 1907-08 for imports from the United Kingdom
and India are unduly high, as the customs statistics from which they were
mainly drawn were for 13 months instead of 12. A deduction of about
12 per cent, should be made from the amount. .
The tables purport to show trade in transit through Seistan and Kain as well
as that of these provinces themselves. It should be noted, however, that last
year’s figures (1907-08) do not include goods sent by post. For instance, Kanawez
silk and turquoises sent to India through Seistan by post are not included
among the imports from Khorassan for that year.
It has been found impossible to distinguish between goods from the
United Kingdom and India and those of Continental origin. Perhaps 10 to
12 per cent, would represent the all round proportion of the latter. In any cases
where Continental wares form the bulk of the goods, a remark has been made
to this effect.

About this item

Content

The file consists of a printed report on the trade of the provinces of Seistan and Kain [Sīstān and Qā’en] in Persia [Iran] for the Year 1908-1909, by Major Roger Lloyd Kennion, HM Consul for Seistan and Kain. It is Number 4396 of the Annual Series of Diplomatic and Consular Reports. The report was edited at the Foreign Office and the Board of Trade, and presented to both Houses of Parliament of the United Kingdom in January 1910.

The report includes a table of contents, which lists sections including: tabular statements showing currency, weights and measures, and population and products; the movement of trade in articles in which British and Indian industries are principally interested; openings for British trade; the comparative progress of foreign competition; difficulties which the law and practice of the country place in the way of trade; trade routes; concessions to traders; local products; livestock; mines; factories; current prices; the cost of living; population and health; and statistics of imports and exports.

The report includes a map showing trade routes in Seistan and Kain and the surrounding area (folio 3).
