I received your letter No.K/81 dated 29th August 1934
-nich ^3 in continuation of your letter No. C/213 of 18th July
1934 and understood its contents "ith regard to the despatch
of the proposed expedition by the Air Headqaarters in November
next to complete the first reconnaissance and to establish
landing grounds and refuelling stations and that the Air
Headquarters have decided not to transfer the existing landing
ground at Masirah to Shagha as ^as intended originally but
to re-mark and level it to the best of their ability.
In reply to your above quoted letters I say firstly that
I accord permission to you to complete the proposed
reconnalesance as mentioned in your letter and shall be
pleased to depute my uncle Saiyid Shahab bin Faisal to
accompany you as he did during the first reconnaissance.
Reference paras 3 and 4 of your letter K/81 dated 29th
August 1934. I have no objection to the despatch of t^o dho w s
■■'ith tools and materials to Masirah to improve the landing
ground and then proceed to Rag al Jazir. It is difficult to
answer your questions w ith regard to the despatch of the t w o
dho^s because the time w hich has been fixed by you for the
departure of the dho w s is approaching and I am at present at
Sahar and w ill return to Muscat on the 21st September. It
takes a considerable time to communicate w ith the Sheikhs of
Masirah from w hom I ^ould not be able to receive any ans w er
b y the time you intend to send the t w o dho w s. I regret that
a t the present moment none of the Sheikhs are present to
proceed w ith the dho w s. All I can do in this matter is to
send a letter by the dho w s to the Sheikh of Masirah to afford
them assistance but I do not kno w w hether the Sheikh w ill be
a t Masirah or not.

The volume contains correspondence in the form of letters, telegrams and reports related to the Air Headquarters, Iraq, planning to carry out ground reconnaissance for landing grounds and refuelling stations mid-way between Masirah and Murbat. The volume also includes instructions for landing ground reconnaissance at Sauqrah Bay [also referred to as Sukra Bay or Khor Gharum]. The instructions include descriptions of two possible landing grounds at the site.

The volume also contains correspondence regarding the following:

  • Obtaining the Sultan of Muscat and Oman’s permission in order for the work to take place
  • Arrangement for a member of the Muscat and Oman, Council of Regency, as well as some Shaikhs, particularly the Shaikh of Masirah, Khamis bin Hilal, and other individuals to accompany the reconnaissance team
  • The building of oil and petrol store at Murbat
  • The proceeding of two dhows from Muscat to Masirah with a supervisor, labour and materials to carry out the remarking of Masirah Island landing ground, and two dhows from Muscat to rendezvous with the sloop for the marking of landing grounds in Sauqrah Bay
  • Reports on the reconnaissance took place in February and November 1934. The February work report contains information about Masirah Island that have been gathered from Shaikh Salim bin Nasir Al-Maj‘ali.

Folios 280 to 298 of the volume consist of 19 black and white photographs which are placed in one envelope (f 299a). These are aerial photographs, and they are most likely related to the Royal Air Force (RAF) reconnaissance for landing grounds in the area between Masirah and Murbat. The front side of these photographs is dated November 1933, and the reverse side of each of them has a Royal Air Force stamp dated December 1934.
