EAST INDIA (ENTERTAINMENT OF INDIAN AND
COLONIAL GUESTS).
Correspondence relating* to the entertainment
of Indian and Colonial Guests visiting* this
Country by invitation of His Majesty’s
Government.
No. 1.
Letter from the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. to the Treasury, No.. F. 4643, dated
'23rd July, 1902.
1 am directed by the Secretary of State for India in Council to address
you on the subject of the expenses that have been incurred on account of the
visit to this country, in honour of the Coronation, of Indian Princes*, delegates,
and troops.
In the Indian estimates which were framed in March last a sum of
£86,700 was provided for these purposes. Since the postponement of the
Coronation the Secretary of State in Council has been led by considerations
of an Imperial nature to agree to a prolongation of their original stay in
England at an additional heavy expense. Moreover, in India, as the Lords
Commissioners of the Treasury are aware, a special Durbar A public or private audience held by a high-ranking British colonial representative (e.g. Viceroy, Governor-General, or member of the British royal family). is to be n Gxt
year in honour of His Majesty’s Accession, and it is of course understood that
this must be paid for entirely from Indian revenues.
Towards defraying the expenditure incurred in connection with the
Coronation ceremonies in this country a sum of £2,000 from Imperia un s
has been allotted to the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. by the Coronation Executive Committee,
with an intimation that no further assistance was to be expected from t is
source.
Under the circumstances stated, this contribution from imperial ffi n ^ s
seems to the Secretary of State in Council to be wholly inadequate, an e
would strongly urge upon the Lords Commissioners ot the ireabiin a i
would be fair and politic if the Imperial Government were to undertake to
defray at least a substantial portion of the cost ot entertaining t e n lan
Representatives and troops who have been invited to an Impena ceremoiua in
this country, and who may reasonably be regarded as guests o t e na ion
Lord George Hamilton trusts that the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury
will be willing' to take the necessary steps in order to be able, by means ot
special grant, to meet from Imperial revenues, either t e w e, or, a ,
a reasonable proportion of the expenditure that has been, an is o e,
