After thi a interview bir. Goukassow went to I aria,
and there had a consultation with I ona, Bard&c, and explained
the situation tn him. This latter gentleman enquired whether
the jius^ian rsanks had bona fide subscribed £30,000. On being
assured that this was the case, he declared that on the face
of it he w&s inclined to assist with the projected railway,
and that he would hand the papers over to Count Vital! for
him to study the» and report thereon to him; that e would
see Lord i eveletoke, and that he had no doubt the latter
would change his wind and come in with hie French friends.
Subsequently . Bard&c, after receiving Count Vi tail’s report,
expressed his willingness to forui and finance a Syndicate tc
carry out a survey and to prepare a complete scheme for sub
mission to and approval of the British and Persian Governments,
on condition that England and hussia between them would per
suade the Persian Goveniiaent to undertake to grant a concession
for a through railway more or less as laid down on the wap,
and, that the final project having been prepared and approved,
and the concessiongr&nted, he would further be prepared to
find the capital for construction. Previous to making this
declaration it was understood that he had had an interview
with Lord Kovelstoke in Paris. Lore recently Mr. Gouk&ssow
met the representatives of Messrs. Chaw Wallace and Co. in
London, who informed him that the British Gov eminent were
supporting the construction of a railway proposed by his firm
from .uhamran to Lurujird, and that they regaraea the con
struction of this line as of greater importance than the
through line. He was further informed that Mr. Schuster had
found that the surplus revenues of Persia amounted to a very
much larger eum than he expected and he was urging upon the
Persian Government the advisability of utilizing this surplus
for the pveaist&ng promotion of railway construction in general
and of the Luhamrah - Burujird line in particular. If this
policy be carried out it seems clear that all the available
surplus revenues of Persia would have to be

As well as accounts of people's experiences in and around Persia [Iran], the correspondence covers a number of other matters relating to the region. Subjects include: the Anglo-Russian convention, 1907; German and Turkish activities in the region; the Persian Civil War of 1908-1909; Russian activities in Persia; the diary kept by Captain Arthur Conolly while he was captive in Bokhara; trade routes; the proposed trans-Persian Railway; the Baghdad Railway; the chaotic situation in southern Persia, including the region's gun traffic; and British relations with the Bakhtiari and Qashqai tribes.

Additionally, the papers include forwarded reports, memoranda, newspaper cuttings, etc., all relating to Persia, often with requests for Curzon's reviews and opinions. There are also several invitations to dinners and meetings. The file also touches upon more personal matters such as the death of his wife, Mary, in July 1906, a motorcar accident in 1908, and his appointment as Chancellor of Oxford University in 1907.

The French language material consists of letters from Massoud Mirza zil Sultan.
