At an intervie-r held at this office vith Mr* -acipbell,
the senior partner of Uessrs. Forbes, Forbes, ua»pbell and Co.,
thie information was imparted to him, and he iw^odiately tele
graphed hin reprenentative at Karachi, who called a i?teeting of
the Karachi Chansber of Coimserce, and after explaining the
situation to them they passed a resolution urging upon the
Government the importance from the ooint of view of the aorcan-
tilo ooiaauyiity of Karachi of constructing the through line to
connect the railway systems of ~urope and India, and begging the
Government to regard the construction of such a railway of
greater importance than the construction of any other in Persia,
ihey telegraphed the substance of the resolution to the dovern-
*ent of India.
About the same time fr. Ooukassow called on the
•uGRi&n Ambassador in London and laid before him the factors
above isentioned. Count Bechendorff forthwith called on Gir
Arthur HiohoXeon to enquire whether the British Government had
in any way changed the views it held when it agreed to support
in conjunction with the hussian Government the project of a
through railway connecting the railway system of Hucsia with
that of India. It is understood that, although generally speak*
a nr tne views of the British Government have not altered, they
are not at the moment prepared to actively support cither the
Guhaarah - Burujird hailway or the through Version line, be
cause owing to the Van Islamic agitation that has been aroused
by the action of Italy towards Turkey, the British Government
consider that any apparent disposition on their part to bring
pressure of any kind to bear on a Mohammedan nation, nuch as
ieroia for exaisple, would be very ill timed.

As well as accounts of people's experiences in and around Persia [Iran], the correspondence covers a number of other matters relating to the region. Subjects include: the Anglo-Russian convention, 1907; German and Turkish activities in the region; the Persian Civil War of 1908-1909; Russian activities in Persia; the diary kept by Captain Arthur Conolly while he was captive in Bokhara; trade routes; the proposed trans-Persian Railway; the Baghdad Railway; the chaotic situation in southern Persia, including the region's gun traffic; and British relations with the Bakhtiari and Qashqai tribes.

Additionally, the papers include forwarded reports, memoranda, newspaper cuttings, etc., all relating to Persia, often with requests for Curzon's reviews and opinions. There are also several invitations to dinners and meetings. The file also touches upon more personal matters such as the death of his wife, Mary, in July 1906, a motorcar accident in 1908, and his appointment as Chancellor of Oxford University in 1907.

The French language material consists of letters from Massoud Mirza zil Sultan.
