north-west over an open plain, the high road to
Selina. At 4 miles pass Umar Mil, 40 houses, on
the left of the road ; trees and cultivation ; water
plentiful ; and skirt the foot of low hills on the left. At 4£ miles the road inclines to the
left along the foot of the hills on that side, the road to Selina runs straight on. At 5 miles
pass the" foot of a low spur on the left. At 5£ miles pass another spur on the left and a
small hamlet on the right of the road, direction north-west. At 83 miles cross a shallow
stream filling a large pool, surrounded by rushes, and go north down the left bank of
tbe stream passing Nazarabad, 15 bouses, on the right bank. At 9 miles reach the second
village of Nazarabad, 16 bouses. t
Hoad passable to all arras throughout. Two villages on a level plain covered with good
grazing, no trees. Troops could camp south of the villages at the foot of the hills by the
pool. "Supplies : sheep and goats. No firewood. Elevation 4,690 feet.
Sar-ab Lillo- 6 ? 15£ Road good, runs over the open plain covered with
FAli> grass and small shrubs, in a westeily direction.
At I 3 miles pass a large newly-made garden, full
of small trees, on the right of the road, and cross
an irrigation stream, pass a garden house and a few huts. Direction now south-west by
west. °At miles cross an irrigation stream and pass the village of Chah Khabut,
containing about 20 houses, a few trees, some crops and cultivation. At 3} miles, after
going in a south-west by west direction, cross an irrigation stream and a road running from
Karmanshah to Dar Darosh, which passes Chah Kasim about 1 mile off to the west. At
83 miles join a road coming from Karmanshah and proceed along it in a westerly direction,
skirting hills on the left, till 4| miles. The road here bends round to south-west and leaves
us, running towards Daitchi; continue on west over the plain. The heads of one or two
trees visible at the foot of the low hills bounding the plain to the west show the position
of Lillofar. At 5 miles cross a small stream and at 6 £ reach the halting place.
Road good and passable to all arras throughout and on a broad front.
Excellent grazing everywhere en route. A few huts, a water-mill and a small lake
full of spring's surrounded by rushes. Water good, is full of fish ; grazing good in the
vicinity

Leave the village by a track running south
west through tombstones and ascend gen ly over
a hill whose summit is reached at 1 £ miles. The
hill is 4(J0 feet in height and the last KiO yards
are impassable to guns. On over open down-like country, with low hills all round, and descend
gradually. At 83 miles cross a road from Karmanshah to Guran. At 3? miles the
Mabidasht plain appears in front at the bottom of an easy descent of about 200 feet. At
4-3 miles the two villages of Nan Mewa are passed away to the west. At 63 miles pass
through Chiah Bulak, the largest of a cluster of villages of that name. 50 houses, no trees.
Water from wells. Troops could camp anywhere in the vicinity. At 7i miles, direction
south-south-west, cross a small watercourse nearly dry, easy banks. The plain is covered
with villages, and herds of cows, and Hocks of sheep and goats are everywhere grazing
(September). The plain is alluvial and covered with shrubs and withered grass. At 83 miles
pass by the village of Aliabad, 10 houses, no trees, ard go up the right bank of the Ah-i Merk.
At 9* miles crossTthe river, a muddy stream 14 feet broad, 10 inches deep, between 18 feet banks
20 to 30 yards apart. A considerable amount of cutting necessary to render the river passable
to guns. At 9f miles pass the village of Ferial i mile off to the east, 20 houses, no trees. Direc
tion now south-west. Cross a dry watercourse with easy hanks. At H 3 miles pass Chah Zowar

Government of India publication printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, 1899. The volume contains information on 28 land routes into and within Persia undertaken by Captain E B Burton, 17th Bengal Cavalry, and Captain H B Vaughan, 7th Bengal Infantry.

Each route description includes number of route, distances in miles (intermediate and total), stage numbers and names, precise details of the route, and remarks on road conditions, geography, settlements and peoples encountered, agriculture, access to water, and fuel and forage supply.

The volume includes a preface by Lieutenant-Colonel James Wolfe Murray, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch, Simla, dated 1 March 1899.

At the back of the volume is a map of south-west Persia showing the routes taken (folio 43).

An ink stamp on the front cover records the confidential nature of the publication and that it was being transmitted for the information of His Excellency the Viceroy only.
