became llussia’s southern outpost, a centre of caiava

' The nomads of the Steppes, however still contmued
their raids, to which llussia retaliated by pushin 0 her
frontier steadily further towards the south.
In 1834 a Russian fort was constructed at the head
of Kultuk Bay on the Caspian, under the name of Novo
Atriovsk! in orde;' to dominate the Ktr^.z and
Turkoman tribes and to protect the eastern trade of
Empire. Four years later an expedition under Count
Perovski was despatched from Orenburg to Ivhna m
order to release certain Russian prisoners to establish
We relations, and to subjugate the Kirghiz tribes.
The expedition suffered greatly from heat and llrou ^ ’
and ultimately was obliged to retire. Ibe
ever, persuaded by an English officer. Captain Abbot,
who visited Khiva while Perovski was attempting to
reach it, and also, no doubt, hearing of the preparation
of a second Russian expedition, made Ins submission,
and liberated the Russian prisoners in question.
In 1842 a treaty was concluded by winch the Khan
undertook never to engage in hostilities with Russia or to
permit acts of robbery to pass unpunished. Advantage
was taken of the peace thus secured to improve the
Russian line of communications with c0 ““ tl ^
hitherto held by the Kirghiz hordes of ^ o y th er n
Turkistan. Ports were constructed to form links in the
line of advance along the Syr Dana (Jaxartes), from
Aralsk, on the coast of the Aral Sea (constructed in
1848) to Fort Perovsk 250 miles further up the river, built
on the ruins of Ak Masjid, a town of Khokand, in 18o3.
Further active operations were checked by the out-
break of the Crimean war. The Khan of Khokand,
however, attempted to retake Fort Perovsk (with the
open sympathy of the Amir of Bokhara), and in 1800
