I returned to the Regiment considerably chastened, wondering what the future held
for me if my application was rejected. However, to my great relief and delight, the
Regiment - which had by then moved to Lucknow - received a telegram instructing me to
report for duty to the Resident and Chief Commissioner of Aden, under whom I was to
commence a three year probationary period as an officer of the IPS The branch of the British Government of India with responsibility for managing political relations between British-ruled India and its surrounding states, and by extension the Gulf, during the period 1937-47. . So ended one
stage of my career.
