During my time in Campbellpur, I had become engaged to my dear wife, Mary Connors,
whom I had met in Rawalpindi, the H.Q. of the Civil Division about forty miles
distant on the Grand Trunk Road. She had been in India for about two years as a
Nursing Sister of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, and was
stationed at the British Military Hospital in Rawalpindi. She was Irish and a
Roman Catholic, like myself, and her parents came from a well known farming
family in County Waterford. Although we announced our engagement we could not get
married for the time being as, under the rules of the
Indian Political Service
The branch of the British Government of India with responsibility for managing political relations between British-ruled India and its surrounding states, and by extension the Gulf, during the period 1937-47.

no officer was allowed to marry until he had been confirmed at the end of three years
