Please see Mr. Burnett’s letter of 22nd September
and the telegram ^ 0*1155 below.
I believe you handled the previous correspondence
with the Treasury on the question of the use of Indian or
Pakistan currency in the G-ulf Sheikhdoms; do you know what
exactly was finally decided? As you may be aware the
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. (and through him the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. ,
Bahrein) is responsible for the protection of Pakistan’s
interest5 as well as those of the United Kingdom and India,
so Pakistan will be entitled to know the reasons for the
imposition of any restriction on Pakistan’s currency.
If the Foreign Office have not kept us fully informed of
what has been done on this matter I could have a word with

In July last the Treasury proposed a
telegram to Bahrein agreeing with a
suggestion in telegram No. 108 of the 2ist
June, from Sir R.Hay to the Foreign Office, that instruct
ions be issued to the effect that British offices in the
Gulf including Post Offices (except Gwadar Post Office so
long as it is administered by Pakistan) and Gable and
Wireless offices should deal only in Indian currency.
Sir R.Hay gave as reasons for this: the difficulty of
keeping accounts in two currencies and the fact that
