Revision of Aitchison’s Treaties.
Sir,
With reference to your letter No.P.96/27, dated
the 10th February 1927, I am directed to forward, for
transmission to the Foreign Office for their observations,
a proof of the Narrative of Aden and the South Coast of
Arabia.
2. The following is a list of Treaties Agreements,
etc., concluded subsequent to the last addition (1909) of
Aitchison’s Treaties, the text of v/hich does not appear
to have been published or otherwise divulged before. It is
proposed to publish them in the revised edition of the
Treaties subject to the approval of His Majesty’s
Government:

Convention regarding the water supply of Aden,
concluded with the Abdali Sultan, dated the 11th
April 1910 (referred to on page 6 of the Proof).
Agreement between Sultan Ghalib bin Awadhth
bin Omar ( the Kaiti) and Sultan Mohsin bin Saleh
bin Abdalla ( the Wahidi) dated the 22nd March
1910 (referred to on page 27 of the proof).
Convention between Great Britain and Turkey re
garding the boundaries of Aden, dated the 9th
March 1914 (referred to on page 1 of the Proof).
Protectorate Treaty with the Audali Sultan, dated
the 19th September 1914 ( referred to on page 18
of the Proof).
Agreements with the Alawi, Haushabi and Kotaibi
Sheikhs - 1914-1915 ( referred to on pages 22,
20 and 24 of the Proof).
Treaty with Saiyid Muhammad bin Ali bin Muhammad
bin Anmed bin Idris, the idrisi Saiyid. and the

Content

This part concerns the Government of India's decision to issue a revised edition of Aitchison's Treaties (full title: A Collection of Treaties, Engagements and Sanads Relating to India and Neighbouring Countries ). Since the new edition requires additions to the narrative portions of its multiple volumes, the Government of India's Foreign and Political Department requests revised narratives for each geographical area covered, in order to incorporate the principal events that have occurred since the publication of the previous edition in 1909.

The correspondence consists of interdepartmental discussion covering the following: what should and should not be included in the revised edition; the decision to publish each volume of the revised edition as it is completed; a request from the Foreign Office to receive copies of the proofs of revised volumes; arrangements for the distribution among departments of the completed volumes of the new edition.

Sections discussed include those on the following: Siam [Thailand]; Aden and the south coast of Arabia; Persia [Iran]; Afghanistan; Somaliland and Shoa [Shewa]; Zanzibar. Also mentioned are those on Kashgar, Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan.

In addition, the correspondence discusses the Government of India's proposal to remove from the new edition those sections relating to Irak [Iraq], Zanzibar, Somaliland, Shoa, Ceylon [Sri Lanka], and Eastern Archipelago, on the grounds that they are no longer of direct interest to India, and that the cost of printing them would therefore not be justifiable.
