the 1862 Convention should in the first place be
urged on the Minister of Court. Judging, however,
by the attitude which has been adopted in the matter
by Taimourtache, there is perhaps force in his
suggestion that strict compliance with his instructions
on the point would have produced no useful result,.
3. The Persian counter-draft now submitted is
a very good piece of work, and were it a question of
negotiating between two Powers of an equal degree of
civilisation, would be a very reasonable document.
It will be seen that -
(a) right of search in territorial waters is
reserved to the Soverei^i.
(b) On the high seas, reciprocal right of
arrest in the case of ships of less than 500
tons net is given when there is good reason to
suspect -
'i) that the vessel is not entitled to fly
the^flag of the other High Contracuin^
(ii) that it is, or has,been, engaged in the
slave trade during tne currency of the
voyage on which io is encountered.
( o) Ships ^convicted of an of fence 7 * under
'-j (i) or (ii) above are to be taken to the
nearest port of the H.C.P. whose flag they
carry, or handed over to a warship of that
Party.
(a; ^ Tiial is to take place before a Court
of the IVC.P. whose flag was hoisted, or to which
tne vessel belongs, which shall be responsible
for fixation of the compensation due should it'

This volume contains correspondence between British officials concerning agreements between the British and Persian governments related to the suppression of the slave trade in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . Much of the correspondence is between officials at the Foreign Office, the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. and the British Legation in Tehran.
Specifically, the correspondence relates to discussions concerning the drafting of an article relating to slavery in a proposed Anglo-Persian Treaty and the revision of the Anglo-Persian Slavery Convention of 1882. Specific incidents regarding slavery in the region are also discussed intermittently throughout the volume.
In addition to this correspondence, the volume contains several extracts and drafts of agreements (most of which are in French) and the following documents:
