I am directed to refer to the correspondence ending with Marine
Department letter ]fo* 232-11, dated the 20 th i’ehruary 1923, to the
address of the Under Secretary of State for India, Financial Demrt-

2 . With reference to the remarks made in that letter
on paragraph 6 of Foreign Office letter of the 15 th May 1922, I am
to state that in his telegram, dated the 27 th February 1920, the
Ho Fight Hon'hle the Secretary of State for India sanetioned, inter alia
an expenditure of Rs* 3,63l for additions and alterations to the ~
lighthouse on the ^uoin Island. The estimate for that work was framed
in 1918 and was later found to he quite inadequate. A revised
estimate for these and other alterations amounting to Rs. 22,289 was
received in June 1921 , but the Government of India decided to post
pone the work on account of financial stringency. Intitbation has no?/
been received to the effect that a sum of Rs.6,752 has already been
incurred by the local Public Works authorities in connection with the
purchase of materials for the work and that the materials purchased
have been stored at Henjam. The materials purchased include 400 bags
of coal which has already greatly deteriorated. prevent further
loss, orders have been issued for the immediate sale of this coal,
by public auction, and for a moiety of the amount realised to be
credited to His Majesty 1 s Government.
