No. 1100/LB Dated at Sea, 19th OctOder 1926.
Sir,
I have the honour to inform you that I landed at
Bas-al-Arz p.m. today and inspected the deacon and light.
Attached is a tracing of the portion of chart No.
22 "Koweit hardour and Approaches” showing the approximate
courses of S. S. "British Sailor" up to the time she grounded
as worked dack from the position given to the court in Bomday
vis H miles from the deacon and one cadle off shore. The
courses have deen worked dack from the evidence.
The tracing shows the arc over which Bas r al-Arz
light is visible viz from 119° through South to 344° vide
pages 35 and 36 Admiralty List of Lights part VI No.304, the
arc is given for its full range viz 7 miles. It will thus de
seen that did S.S. "British Sailor" pursue the courses she
said she did as here laid down, it is odvious the light only
could have deen visidle to her between the points A and B
and that after passing A five miles from the light up to the
time she grounded it was obscured and meant to de obscured.
I*consider therefore that the lightkeeper*s
statement must de accepted. He showed me the lamp. He subse
quently exhibited an ordinary hurricane lantern. He also
seems very intelligent.
The lamp used at Pas-al-Arz is an ordinary
steamer’s masthead oil steaming lamp visible through an arc
o
of 225 . These lamps are constructed to have a range on a
dark night with a clear atmosphere of at least 5 miles.
Ships now a days have electric steaming lights
and they are visidle of course beyond five miles; but I think
it is generally recognised that these lamps burning oil
have
