it is very doubtful if it would be possible to arrive at eny
accurate figure. Ihe Government of India agree that these
difficulties are reel end they consider that, on the whole,
the necessities oi the cone would be met if the charges we re
calculated proportionately, for the period the relief vessel
is employed as such, on the actual expenditure on the R.I.M.S.
"Lawrence” for the official year in which the relief takes
place.
4. The "Lawrence" was only withdrawn for refit once
between the 1st August 1923 (when she undertook the dual
duties of lighthouse tender end political despatch vessel)
and the 1st November 1925 (since when all charges connected
with the Lighting and Buoying of the
Persian Gulf

met from dues levied from shipping^ end that was in 1924 when
she was relieved by the "Elphinetone". This vessel was
employed as relief vessel for 2 months and 21 days all told;
and as the total cost of the "Lawrence" for 1924-25, including
leave and pension charges, amounted to Rs. 4,55,590, the
proportionate cost for the above period works S^-to Rs.1,02,350.
The amount recoverable from His Majesty's Government is there
fore a moiety of 3/4ths of Rs. 1,02,350, i.e. Rs. 38,381. I
am to explain that the cost of maintenance of the " -Lawrence"
was heavier in 1924-25 then in 1923-24 because she had to cany
out the dual duties throughout the year as against only 7 months
3n 1923-24. This involved larger consumption of provisions,
stores end oil fuel and heavier repair charges.
5. The Government of India trust that His Majesty's
Government will approve of these revised arrangements. I am
to add that the Government of India have decided to follow the
above arrangement in connection with the employment of the
"Netravati" as a relief vessel from the 21st February to the
13th...
