Simla, the £3rd April 1926.
My dear Guntar,
During the last few years the B.I.M.S- Lawrence
has bean employed both as a political despatch ship and
also in connection with lighting and buoying in the
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . It is now under contemplation to withdraw
the Lawrence from this work and the Foreign and political
Department have asked whether the Patrick Stewart could
be spared as a substitute without serious detriment to
.her normal duties of cable laying, inspection, etc.
\
hill you kindly let me know urgently how far this would
be practical. I may add that the Indo European
Telegraph Department would realise a substantial sum
on account of hire of the vessel while employed on such
extraneous duties and this amount would be helpful
in tending to reduce the anticipated deficit on the
working of the Department.
2. I am writing this on behalf of the Secretary,
Industries and labour Department. You will understand
that you are merely asked for an expression of your
opinion in the natter. The final decision would of
course rest with the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. but the Government
of India would probably wish to mention your views in
any proposals they may make on the subject.
Yours sincerely,
3 d. B.Coburn.
