In accordance with the suggestion mentioned
in paragraph 18 the question of themaintenance of
the Resident’s despatch vessel from Indian
Revenues was submitted to Lord Inchcape’s Committee
(1922-23) and was considered by that body in
connection both with Marine Expenditure and with
Political expenditure. The Government of India
put up to the Committee two memoranda urging the
necessity of maintaining a despatch vessel at the
disposal of the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , and
recommending a suggestion by Sir P,Z. Cox to
ffliuce expenditure by using the despatch vessel to
carry out ; in addition to her own duties ; the
duties of lighthouse tender, for the performance of
which a second Royal Indian Marine vessel, the
’’Nearchus", was maintained in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .
The Committee recommended that the cost of the
’’Lawrence” should henceforth be borne on the
Political (instead of the Marine vote) and that
Sir P.Z. Cox’s suggestion should be carried into
effect.
In pursuance of this recommendation, but in
anticipation of the Secretary of Stated approval,
the Government of India had the ”Lawrence” fitted
(with lifting gear etc for dealing with buoys etc)
for the performance of her new duties, during
her refit in the summer of 1923, at a cost of
Rs.50,150. The "Uearchus” was laid up under a
care and maintenance party and put on the sale
list. She was eventually sold in 1924 for
Rs.30,510
