Nevertheless it is proposed to lay
before the Foreign Office the Government of India’s
jproposals as they stand - with one modification.
The Foreign Office, or rather the
Treasury, are not likely to agree very readily to
the proposal that they should contribute half the
future '’political” cost of the "Lawrence” even though

eighth might well be divided again, with equity,
between Foreign Office and Colonial Office, as is
suggested in the draft, but this point will not
appeal to the Treasury): a proposal has therefore
