“ The Under-Secretary of State/'
Foreign Office,
London, S.W. i.
11th Mar ch, 19 24.
Sir: -
I am directed by Mr. Secretary Ramsay MacDonald to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter Do. P.917 of the
7th instant relative to the employment of the R.I.M.S.
"Lawrence” for the additional duties of lighthouse
tender, in place of the "ITearchus", which it is proposed
to scrap.
2. It is particularly important, from the point
of view of this department, that the employment of the
"Lawrence" on lighthouse duty shall not involve any
greater charge on Imperial funds, and shall, if possible,
v-
effect a saving as compared with the employment of the
"Nearchus" . With a view to satisfying himself on this
point, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald considers it necessary
to await the final estimates in respect of the various
adjustments involved, which will show the full
financial result of the new arrangement, before
concurring in the suggestion to scrap the "Nearchus".
I am
Sir
Your obedient Servant
The Under Secretary of State
In-dia Office.
