Detailed accounts passing thro* the hands of
the Accountant General show that the cost cl stores of
various sorts (oil, acetylene etc) which are obviously
for the consumption of the lighthouses, _ight-buo l ys etc
have been charged to the Uearchus, unich <is the
distributing agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . (ITo doubt this is a convenient
way of accounting, in India, the’ it is a very
inconvenient one for purposes oi discussion here.)
prom the above it seems to follow that the
annual cost of the hoarchus herself when she was paid off
amounted to, in round figures, Rs 2 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees ; and the cost of
the lighthouse stores she distributed to Rs ijg lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees .
