The cost of the lighting service is stated by the
Government of India to have been roughly Re 4,34,000
for 1922-3, and to be estimated at Rs 4,10,000 for
1923-24. Both these figures of Rs 4,34,000 and He
4,10,000 included the sum of Rs 3,52,084 on account of
"Mearchus", leaving a balance on average of Rs 70,000
for the rest of the working expenses. (Actually this
may be much reduced by expenditure in England wmch tne
Government of India have not taken into account: but as
it varies widely e.g. from £1428 in 1921-22 to £2 only
in 1922-23 it is ignored here also.)
But in future, as is explained above, instead ol
the Rs 3,52,100 for Hearchus a sum of Rs 4,90,635 will,
under the arrangement proposed by the Government of
India, have to be estimated for the Lawrence, giving a
total estimated outlay on the service of Rs 5,60,635
against an estimated revenue of Rs 5,06,250#
