Enclosure to paragraph 4 of General despatch No. 27
24th March 1921,
Enclosure No. 1.
No. 7329-C. R., dated Bombay, the 31st August 1920.
From—The Officiating Director of the Royal Indian Marine,
To—The Secretary to the Government of India, Marine Department.
I have the honour to submit for the sanction of the Government of India
n revised permanent establishment for the R. I. M. S. “ Nearchus
Since the arrival of the <f Nearchus ” in India she has been employed on
various duties in addition to her allotted duties as tender to the lights in the
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . Some of the lights also, when the ship first arrived, were only
under construction and some had not been established. War conditions
prevailing also modified some of the duties the ship was required for and
extended others.
The war being now over and the scope and duties of the “Nearchus”
clearly defined, I have, after careful consultation with the Superintendent,
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Lights, and Commanding Officer, “ Nearchus,” finally revised the
establishment.
Apart from the salary of the wireless operator, which is now a marine
rating and which amounts to Rs. 223-12-0 per mensem and was not included
in her previous establishment when a military operator was employed, it will
be observed that the increased cost to Government is only Rs. 84-4-0 per
mensem.
In view of the small size of the ship, the very cramped accommodation
and the great heat experienced in the hot weather in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , I have
removed one Sub-Lieutenant and made permanent the two Indian watch-
keepers, appointed as a war measure in his place. I have removed the gunner
and in his place appointed in lieu an Indian artificer with a knowledge of the
peculiar of mechanism of light house, of light ships and buoys, there being
much more need for a man of this class than for a gunner. Roth Sub-
Lieutenant and gunner will be absorbed in the General List.
In lieu of the Assistant Engineer I have appointed an Engineer Lieuten
ant-Commander and one Engineer Sub-Lieutenant. The water tube, boilers
and turbine oil fuel engines of the “Nearchus” require the supervision of
an experienced officer. An officer of experience is also required to advise the
Superintendent on matters connected with the mechanism of the various
lights. '
To avoid delaying the “ Nearchus ** which has completed her refit and
Was urgently required back in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , and to avoid the expense of
having to transfer people to and from her in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , I have anticipat
ed the sanction of the Government of India and have despatched her trom
Bombay with her establishment as revised.
