The papers in this volume relate to the following: the British diplomatic and military personnel serving in Persia; the East India Company scheme for reopening the Indus River to navigation; and political and military developments in the Sikh Empire of the Punjab, the Talpur Amirates of Hyderabad, Mirpur and Khairpur in Sindh, and the Barakza’i Amirate of Kabul in Afghanistan.

The correspondence in this volume is primarily between the following: the British Government in India; the Governor General of India; the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Sindh; the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Ludhiana; the Royal Indian Navy; the Lieutenant Governor of the North-Western Provinces; and the British Envoy and Resident Minister to the Court of Persia.
