No. 33. Jeddah.
(20.) 31st Uaroh 1926.
Sir
^ ^ ^ ^
With reference to your despatch Bo,31 (E 1607/509/91)
of the 11th March last, relative to the proposed lighting
of the approaches to Jeddah, I have the honour to state
in regard to the points raised in the penultimate
paragraph of the Board of Trade's despatch of the 8th
March copy of which was enclosed with your despatch
under reference, that
(1) That if the lights are on the automatic
principle as supplied by the Gas Accumulator Co. ltd and
which I believe have received both Admiralty and the
Board of Trade's commendation, the question of efficient
management of the lighthouse service would appear to be
practically eliminated, as these lights require charging
but once yearly. There is in Jeddah a number of pilots
who regularly bring ships into port and these men could
be effectively employed on any work in connection with
the lights or lighthouses that may arise.
(2) The question of setting up a fund for the
efficient control of the revenues collected from ships
in the ^foim of lighting dues is I am afraid out of the
question as this would savour of foreign interference which
is to the Hejazi as a red rag to a bull at the present
moment and which it is most desirable to atroid.

- Ibn Saud's [‘Abd al-‘Azīz bin ‘Abd al-Raḥmān bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd's] reported willingness to meet the expenses for the construction of the proposed lighthouse, following his deposition of King Hussein (later in the correspondence it is suggested that Ibn Saud had been misunderstood, since it is reported that he would not be willing to fund the construction of the lighthouse).
