No. 701-T-A., dated Simla, 6th April 1893.
From— Colonel T. H. Holdich, R. E., Superintendent, Survey of
India,
To—The Quarter Master General in India, Intelligence Branch.
With reference to your No. 1041-1., dated 5th April, calling for an offi
cial report on the survey traverse run by Mr Butcher of the Persian Tele
graph Department from Bushire to Bunder Abbas, I have the honor to
state that I consider Mr. Butcher's work to be exceedingly satisfactory.
The compilation of his traverse has been carried out without difficulty
owing* to the care taken over his observations and the clearness of his record,
and the results, judging by the small amount of error which it has been
necessary to dispense, are most creditable to him. It is seldom that any
officer whose regular official training does not include survey instruction
takes such trouble as Mr. Butcher must have done to master the details
of professional surveying before starting on an exploration. The result is
that I have now the pleasure to record for your information my opinion that
Mr. Butcher is the best unprofessional survey work that we have ever
received from Persia for compilation.
