19th June 1924.,
My Dear Barnes,
We believe that you have found it necessary to close the Bank’s branch
at Birjand. As the fate of the Mirjawa-Duzdap railway may have
influenced your Board in coming to their decision regarding the maintenance
of a branch at this centre, I think it well to let you know, for your confi
dential information and possible guidance, that there is no immediate inten
tion of removing the line, which it is hoped will continue to remain in opera
tion for a year, or perhaps even longer. I write this note in case the informa
tion contained in it may appear to you sufficient to justify a reconsideration
of the matter and the reopening of your branch at Birjand.
(Signed) L. OLIPHANT.

My Dear Oliphant,
On receipt of your letter (Enclo. 1 ante) of the 19th I looked up the
correspondence about Birjand. I find that in September last McMurray sent
us a letter from the Legation asking him if possible to reopen the Branch.,
