(Addressed Tehran, No. 42.)
Colonel Muhammad Hussain Mirza’s conduct and suicide were as I antici
pated duetto plot to rebel against present Persian Government made with Salar
Amjad. It is probable that plot was instigated by Salar who had already been
V'h-J ai rest with Mahmud Mirza at Tehran for suggesting arrest of Minister
Mar together with all Amir Lashkars and who had no desire to hand over u,
1 i 8 ti\ fthS ^ 1 an exam i aa tion of his accounts. Salar and Muham-
mad Hussain both belonged to Swedish Gendarmerie and were against present
^ Q? r v as been brau 8 ' ht to Meshed for court-martial together with
.one f aulat Shahi an accomplice of Hussain Khan. It is stated that matter was
iought to a head as tar as Muhammad Hussain is concerned by abuse of Slnh
by Colonel Air Shah Khan, a former member of Cossack Brigade and the newly
appointed C ommandant, Birjand and Duzdap Forces. y
Ar . . () / bcors f/ former Swedish Gendarmerie cannot be relied on by Prime

Kaisiammeh complained openly a few days ago to me of want of education of

Telegram P., from the British Military Attache, Meshed, to the Chief of
the General Staff, Simla, No. 311, dated the 30th June 1924.
. 1- With reference to the recent events in Birjand. Last night Salar Amiad
arrived in Meshed and is now in custody in the barracks outside the citv. The
body oi the Chief of Staff is en route from Duzdap to Meshed by car. The
Birjand affair is.attributed by Amir-i-Lasbkar to plot of Salar Amjad.
Amanuilah Mirza is due to arrive in Meshed to-day by aeroplane from Tehran
\ Not ? h V Af.<9.-3.—Salar Amjad was deprived of command of 2nd Brigade, Had (Meshed)
Division m May last for threatening when drunk, to use his men to arrest the Commander-in-Chief
ami the Divisional Commanders. No previous information about recent events in Birjand has
been received, but it would appear from the above that the Chief of Staff, Meshed Division has been
murdered as result of a plot attributed to Salar Amjad. Further reports are expected from
Meshed].
