Thana System.
In Sandemsn’s time there were no thanas in the present sense of the term.

The first thana was established in Mastung in 1892 and was in the nature
of a punitive post paid for by the Sardars of tribes which had been harry „
the Khan’s non-tribal subjects. When other thanas were establish i^
Sarawan they were all paid for from the Jirga Fund. As this fund
chiefly from fines and fees in tribal cases, the thanas were thus vl ? tua P f
for from tribal sources. The first Jhalawan thanas _ were likewise paid
from the money earmarked for Jhalawan tribal subsidies.
