In 1901 Mr. William Knox D’Arcy secured an exclusive conces '
for the exploitation of natural gas, petroleum, asphalt and ozokerT
throughout the Persian Empire, with the exception of the five provi ^
of Gilan, Mazanderan, Khorasan, Astarabad and Azerbaijan. This ^ 1
cession was for 60 years and covered an area of 500,000 square mij 011 * '
In 1909 a Company, known as The Anglo-Persian Oil Company ^
formed to take over and operate the Concession.
