This item consists of correspondence and extracts of correspondence relating to the appointment and work of Mehedi [Mahdi - also written Mehedy] Ali Khan as Resident at Bushire. The correspondence consists mostly of political and commercial letters between the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. and the Government of Bengal From c. 1758-1858, the East India Company's administration in Bengal. From 1773-1833, the most senior of the three subdivisions of India, also known as the Supreme Government of India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. , but also includes communications from Ali Khan himself and the Governor of Bushire, Shaikh Nusser [Nasr Al-Madhkur].

The papers mostly discuss the positive effect Ali Khan's appointment has had on the profits of the East India Company. Other matters include Ali Khan's visit to the court of the Persian King Baba Shah in 1799, the abandonment and subsequent re-establishment of the Company's Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. in Sind, and some local affairs at Bushire.
