This item consists of extracts of correspondence and other papers relating to the appointment of British officials at Muscat and relations with the Imam of Muscat more generally. The extracts mostly concern the appointment of Captain David Seton as Resident in Muscat, including his instructions from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. and details of salary and terms of employment. Other matters covered by the papers include:

  • The appointment of Mr Bogle as surgeon to the Imam in early 1800 and his death later that year
  • Captain John Malcolm's dealings with the Imam, including an agreement for a British agent to reside at Muscat
  • The effort to counter French influence in Muscat by the removal of all Frenchmen from the Imam's service.
