On tne 2nd March. 1937 Nasir bin Saliin, an ex-slave
manumittecL in 1933 by the Political .agent, -^aiirain, boarded
H.M.S.Bideford at Khor Quwai and appealed to the Captain
tor assistance m obtaining the release ot his brotner,
Bilal bin Salim, who had been arrested by the Iranians at
Henjam. he stated that about tour years ago he and his
brother^ were tne slaves ot Muhammad bin Humaid of J
Has al Khaimah trom wnom they absconded and crossing to
Henjam they sought refuge on board H.tLS.Fowey. They were
eventually manumitted by the Political ^gent, Bahrain, and
thereafter until the Naval Base was moved to Bahrain found
employment on board H.M*S.Powey and at the Naval Base at
Henjam. TChen the base was moved to Bahrain they Doth
crossed the Gulf and settled in Bakhah supporting themselves
by pearling and so on. They apparently visited Henjam
several times after leaving the place, and about the
middle of January 1^37 they again returned to Henjam, with
papers issued oy tne Shaiich of Bakhah, in order to collect,
or otherwise dispose of, property which they had left
behind when they settled in Bakhah. Whilst they were
carrying their effects to a sailing boat seven Iranian
soldiers followed them and arrested Bilal, who, Nasir
thinks, has been taken to Khorramshahr. Nasir escaped
and returned to Bakhah from where ne eventually crossed
to Khor *uwai and boarded H.M.S.Bideiord. The Captain of
H.M.S.Bideford brought Nasir to Bahrain for investigation
of his case.

The file contains correspondence related to two slavery related incidents raised with the Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. in Bahrain. The first case (folios 1-22) involves two male ex-slaves who were apprehended by the Iranian police while travelling by boat to Henjam [Jazīreh-ye Hengām] to recover their belongings. One of the men escaped from detention and boarded HMS Bideford , where his statement was passed on to the Bahrain Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . The second case (folios 23-45) involves two men owned by the Saudi Arabian Chargé d'Affaires in Baghdad. Both men absconded to Bahrain, where their statements were taken down (folios 29 and 30-33). Both men were given manumission certificates, authorised by the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. . One of the manumitted slaves later complained of being unable to find work in Bahrain, and requested permission to travel to India (folios 39-41). The office notes reveal that Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. staff considered the man 'lazy', and turned down his application for passage to India (folio 43).
