.3.2. Headed by Russian troops at present in East
Persia are 1st and 2nd Semirechia Cossack Regiments about 1600
men in all. 2nd Regiment on line Asterabad, Meshed, Turbat-i-
Haidari and on Meshed, Askabad road, 1st Regiment Turbat-i-
Hardari to Kain. Officer Commanding troops at Turbat-i-Hardari
In addition h reserve s of Semirechia Cossacks
are at Askabad and along railway from Kizil Arvat to Samarkand.
Caucasian General Staff inform me that Force had been
increased by j**. Orenburg Cossacks one Mountain Battery and two
Companies of Militia but I found on arrival that reinforcements
had been countermanded early in February, the Cossacks having
been sent to Khiva to repress disorder and battery and militia
detained at Askabad 0
Number of Austrian prisoners in Transeaspia very consider
ably reduced and authorities state that stricter precautions
against escape are being taken but 1 observed prisoners at
work at Krasnovodsk Station with no visible escort*
Diplomatic Agent at Askabad informed me tnat native
population in Transcaspian Turkestan is now perfectly quiet*
Please inform War Office.
