Reference telegram No. 12-F., of 28tli instant, to Foreign and Political
Department, from Consul, Sistan.
Please telegraph, your views on the general situation especially with regard
to Consul’s suggestion for reinforcing your force.
No machine gun can be sent, and it is most unlikely that any mountain
guns or reinforcements can he despatched owing to more important demands
from elsewhere.

From—His Britannic Majesty J s Consul for Sistan and Kain,
To —The Secretary to the Government of India in the Foreign and Political
Department, Delhi.
(Repeated to Baluchistan.)
Please see my telegram No. 12-E., of the 28th January. Written
agreements to sell have been given me by holders of grain in Sistan and with
assistance of Karguzar we are collecting stock as quickly as possible.
Up to next harvest, namely, June 10th for wheat, and May 21st for barley
we shall have enough. In Kacha there is a considerable reserve stock.
I believe we can ration a considerably larger force in Sistan from June
10th if timely arrangements are made with the Persian Government to sell
us surplus stocks of next harvest.
Por stock required up to harvest we have to pay 81,000 tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. almost
immediately. This includes supplies for Hazaras and Baluch levies who have
found buying in market impossible.
I am about to propose revised rates of pay with free rations for Baluchis,

About this item

Content

The volume contains correspondence regarding the Persian Campaign of the First World War and the movements and activities of the Central Powers in Persia [Iran] between November 1915 and April 1916. The correspondence is particularly concerned with German and Ottoman attempts to infiltrate Afghanistan from Persia, and of ensuring the continued neutrality of both Afghanistan and Persia.

The primary correspondents are the British Legation, Tehran; the British Consulate, Seistan and Kain; and the Government of India.

The volume contains a single folio in French (f 164), a communication from the National Committee for the Protection of the Independence of Persia.

The volume includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
