Enclosures to Despatch to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. No. 21, dated 20 December 1837.
Note that the Enclosures to this Despatch are numbered 3 to 18. The abstract of contents, and Enclosures Nos. 1-2 are not present.
The Enclosures concern reports by the Commander-in-Chief in India on the military position in India.
The papers consist of correspondence, reports and memoranda from General Sir Henry Fane, Commander-in-Chief in India, to the Governor General (Lord Auckland) relating to Punjab affairs, the fortress of Allahabad, the advantageous position of Feerozepore [Ferozepore], the military defence of India, the state of the Indian Army, the military position on the Jumna, and the importance of the Protected Sikh states to British possessions in the North-West of India; minutes by the Governor General in response to the memoranda by the Commander-in-Chief in India on the military defence of India; and other replies to the Commander-in-Chief in India by the Government of India.
