Enclosures to Despatch to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. No. 17, dated 20 October 1837.
The enclosures relate to a letter from King Louis Phillippe of France to Maharajah Runjeet Singh [Ranjit Singh, Ruler of the Punjab], promoting good relations between France and the Punjab. The enclosures are dated 15 September and 9 October 1837.
The papers consist of: letter from Captain Claude Martine Wade, Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Loodiana [Ludhiana], describing the letter, which had been presented to the Maharajah by the French King's Agent, General Jean-François Allard, and making comments on the letter and Allard's involvement; a copy of the letter in French (dated 24 October 1835); and a letter of acknowledgement from the Secretary to the Government of India (William Hay Macnaghten).
