The total population of the Arab tribes in or near
the area of the Company J s operations amounts therefore
to about 195,000 souls, containing some 40,000 men
capable of fighting, of whom, as already stated, about
30,000 were believed to possess rifles up to the year
1924. Since then the greater part of these rifles has
been confiscated by the Persian authorities, though it
has been impossible to ascertain the exact figure of
the quantity collected,, But the tribesmen have been
brought under the effective control of the Persian
Government o The possession of arms and ammunition is
prohibited and rifles are at least no longer openly
carried even in the remoter districts a The tribal
sheikhs have been dispersed and their power broken.
At present, therefore, there appears to be no risk
of the Company's operations being disturbed by the Arab
