This matter has "been discussed with C e G, S c . and the British
Military Security Authorities. The Commander-in T Chief is
hecoming much disturbed at the possibilities of highly detrimental
action by fifth columnists and Axis_agents, if we do not take a
strong line. For this reason I think it essential that His .
Majesty's Legation should take a very firm line with the Persian
Government on most confidential internal questions For instance,
I see no reason why Persia should be allowed to make condition
about the interrogation of suspects for interrmient or^about the
place of confinement. I feel sure that, if the Russians desired
to take similar action, no such demands would ever be advanced
let alone considered. There v/ould, in ^dt, seem to be advantage
in arranging for joint representations with the Russians in regard
to the internment of persons suspected of hostile activities
against the United Nations. The United States kinister ^dt
also be asked to join m such actipn. Apart from other considera
tions, this would prevent the Persians from playing one of phe
Allies against the other. Subject to your views and Provided
His Majesty’s Minister sees no objection, I suggest^that the
stiffening of our attitude on this issue should oe indicated at
once by a^further demand to the Prime Minister for the arrest of
the remaining seven suspects, v/ho, I understand, are among the
worst.
