From Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , Bahrain.
To ' Secretary of State for India, London.
NO.1201-S
Dated the 20th June, 1947.
^ Reference paragraph 4 of India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors.
telegram No.5434 dated the 27th April, 1947, regarding the
proposal that some arms and ammunition should be presented to the
Shaikh of Kuwait on the conelusion of a satisfactory agreement
with Cable & Wireless.
2. I forward herewith a copy of a letter
from the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Kuwait containing his recommendations
in this matter. It will be seen that the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. has
not recommended the gift of any rifles but only of 50,000 rounds
of .303 ammunition together with certain quantities of other
ammunition.
3. I strongly support the Political
Agent*s recommendation so far as the 50,000 rounds of .303 and
100 rounds of 3-pounder Hotchkiss ammunition are concerned and
recommend that if possible this should be made available to him
at once as a lift from-His Majesty's Government. The cost
should not be very high. I also support the Political Ageh's
suggestion that the .303 ammunition should be made available
from Defence Service stocks in Iraq if this can be arranged.
4. With regard to the types of ammunition
mentioned by the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in paragraph 4 it will be
necessary to obtain specimens of these which will take some time.
I would suggest therefore that the gift should be limited to the
.303 and Hotchkiss gun ammunition and that so far as the other
types of ammunition are concerned we should confine ourselves
to giving the Shaikh assistance in procuring and importing them.
