No. SS- I , dated the 29th ultimo, connected with the affairs of Zanzibar and in
reply to the enquiry contained in paragraph 2, to state, for the information of
the Government of India, that the allusion to Mayotte and Mozambique in para-
graph 4 of the letter from this Office, No. 3366 of the 24th July last, refers to
the difficulties which have, from time to time, arisen in respect of the sunnres-
sion of the slave trade on the east coast of Africa with the Prencli and Portu
guese Governments, and which have, His Excellency in Council thinks more
than once been the subject of discussion in Parliament. The observation was
general and had no reference to any difficulties experienced by the Indian
Government. J

From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , Political Dept.
I AM^instructed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 4572, dated
the 25th September 1871, forwarding a copy of certain papers connected with
the succession of His Hignness Syud Burgash to the sovereignty of Zanzibar,
and in reply state that, as the events detailed in this correspondence have long
since passed, and as the question of our relations with Zanzibar is now under
the consideration of the Home Government, there is no necessity for action in
the matter.

Referring to the letter from this Office, No. 743, dated the 21st
February last, and previous correspondence, I am directed to forward,
for submission to the Government of India, the enclosed copy of a
letter from the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Zanzibar, No. 88—365, dated the
5th December 1870, and of its several accompaniments, connected
with the succession of His Highness Syud Bnrgash to the sovereignty
of Zanzibar, and to express regret at the omission to forward these
papers sooner.

The Enclosures consist of correspondence between the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. and the Government of India, containing points of administrative clarification in relation to correspondence concerning the slave trade, and the succession of Syud Burgash [Saiyid Barghash] to the sovereignty of Zanzibar.

The Enclosures are dated 25 September - 25 October 1871.
