2. In the 3rd and 4th paragraphs, Colonel Phayre takes exception to
the manner in which Captain Harrision had described the results following
the assumption of direct rule by His Highness the Khan over the pro
vince of Beyla. I can see nothing in what Captain Harrison writes that
could lead to the supposition that what he stated was intended to be
received as facts, for the correctness of which he could personally vouch, ex
cepting that, as Political Officer at the Court of the Khan of Khelat, these
matters had been communicated to him, he reported them accordingly, and
having no reason to suppose them to be false, he did not recognise any neces
sity for expressing doubts regarding them.
3. The “ household slaves” have been for years the most trusted and
most faithful servants of the Khans of Khelat; and Goolam Jan, who has
been appointed ruler of the province of Beyla, is son of the Shahgassee, No or
Mahomed, who fell by the side of his master, Mehrab Khan, when Khelat was
stormed by the British in 1839.
4. The Khanazadas, literally, offspring or born of the house, are descen
dants of household slaves, and being well looked after and educated, it has
always been the custom in Beloochistan to employ them in places of trust and
importance. Shahgassee is a title of honor, resembling our chamberlain, and
was given to these people on assuming office about the Khan.
5. In paragraph 5 Colonel Phayre comments on what he terms Captain
Harrison’s defence of the Khelat troops at Lus Beyla, and while allowing it to
he quite possible, it may be, as Captain Harrison reports from the place, where
he is likely to get most information on the subject, Colonel Phayre adduces
what is only generally believed elsewhere. Captain Harrison was quite right
in the version he gave. The temporary disturbance caused by the disagree
ment between Misree Mull and Naib Meer Mundoo was reported to Govern
ment at the time. The Jamote question, referred to by Colonel Phayre, was a
pitiful attempt by the Chief of the Jamotes to revive the cause of the ex-Jam,
but directly the Shahgassee moved to the spot, the men, some 3 or 400 hun
dred, who had assembled, dispersed quietly. There was no serious dispute
between the troops and the Jamote tribe whatever.
6 . Captain Harrison will doubtless explain why he omitted to record pro
ceedings in regard to Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Paqueer Mahomed, the able Naib of Kedj, and it
is to be regretted that his reply was not/awaited before Colonel Phayre’s letter,
now under review, was submitted. Major Boss forwarded a letter from Naib
Paqueer Mahomed to him, regarding Kedj subjects taking refuge in Gwadur.
Its tone was I considered objectionable, and not of the usual respectful descrip
tion used by that Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. . I therefore forwarded it through Colonel Phayre to
His Highness the Khan of Khelat, when the latter returned an original letter
to the Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. (which was passed on to him through Major Boss), directing him
in future to refer in such matters/ to His Highness, when he would correspond
with the British authorities.
.7. I see no reason to/suppose that Paqueer Mahomed really intends
resigning bis Naibship. He has now gone to Khelat to report matters to His
Highness, and receive his orders. He has persistently throughout refused to
join the ex-Jam of Beyla,— ? Aznd Khan, and Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Moolah Mahomed, in their
rebellious proceedings ao’^ii/st flio TTKo«

9* As Colonel Phayre does not appear to have informed His Highness
the Khan of Captain/Sandeman’s intention to visit, or of his having visited
the Murree countriesr. or to have instructed Captain Harrison to do so, the lat
ter felt difficulty in discussing the question, so turned the subject. The explor
ing expedition, alluded to by Colonel Phayre in the 12fh paragraph of his letter,
had nothing to do with Captain Sandeman’s visit, and the latter, when it was pro
posed, ought to have been communicated to the Khan in the same manner as
