Local Government Journal. Eight towns of Oman including Sliaige i, Lehay

country of Nejd. ^Requests instructions..
Translation of an article published in tie " Zora " No dated \m RM-ool-Awul 1233
[corresponding with the 2>Qth May 18.71).
A list bavin o* been lately prepared from the statements of well informed
persons of the number of towns, bouses, and gardens within the Province of
iNejd, the same is published below. Although the existence of this number of
bouses is hardly to be credited, because the greater part of the country is dry
and sandy land, and more particularly as the number of bouses and gardens is
given without inspection, yet the numbers given are based on confirmed accounts
from people who have visited the country and on the statement of certain Sheikhs
and Merchants, and their number may be this and even more. . It is only to
be considered that a place said to comprise 5,000 bouses, will have 500
or 600 bouses in the town, and the rest will be the bouses of labourers in the
gardens, which latter are irrigated from springs and wells. The number of
bouses and gardens thus given being only an estimate and not made on actual
reckoning, there will be a matter of more or less, not, however, exceeding 10
or, at most, 20 per cent.
