Belly to inform Midirat Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. that,
after the assurances given by the Otto
man Government in regard to Bahrein,
any interference with the Chief of that
State would not be regarded with indif
ference by the British Government.
Belly should be instructed to go to
Bahrein with as many gun-boats as he
can collect, and ascertain if any threat
has been held out to the Chief by any
of the Turkish officers. Death of mes
senger to be settled diplomatically, and
Midhut Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. to be warned in case
he proposes to interfere with Bahrein.
Belly to report what force the Turks
have at Bahrein.
Information has reached this of an
engagement between Saood’s followers
and the Turkish troops at Lahsa, but
particulars have not transpired.

Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. left Bussorah yesterday by Babel.
He is accompained by two corvettes
and 500 soldiers. He intends to visit
Koweit, Kuteef, and possibly Bahrein.
Bobertson telegraphs from Bussorah
that, after battle outside Lahsa, Saood
remained in possession of field. Garrison
retreated within wall, great numbers
killed on both sides. Turks claim the
victory.
Belly telegraphs, Bahrein, 16th No
vember.—Saood, after partial success,
was defeated near Lahsa and returned
to Guttur. Abdoollah said to have es
caped from Turkish camp. Chiefs from
Saood protest against Turkish invasion.
Bahrein Chief most anxious to preserve
his neutrality.
Belly telegraphs, Bahrein, 22nd No
vember.—Beport of Abdoollah’s escape
from Lahsa confirmed. Saood still in
Guttur. The brothers said to be coales-
cing against Turkish designs. Turkish
Commodore said to have been ordered
to meet him at Bahrein. Chief of
Bahrein most anxious for neutrality.
All quiet there.

vember.—Turkish Commodore with cor
vette and gun-boat arrived here and
hoisted Turkish colours, saving he had no

Letter and Enclosures to HM Secretary of State for India, dated 20 December 1871.

The papers concern the response to the seizure and execution at Bahrein [Bahrain] of a messenger from the 'pirate', Nassir bin Mobarek, who wished to communicate with Guttur [Qatar], and the seizure of letters the messenger was carrying. The messenger was said to have been responsible for the murder of the father of the Ruler of Bahrain [‘Īsá bin ‘Alī Āl Khalīfah], and the letters included some from the Ottoman military commander in the area.

The Enclosures include reports of the incident, including one from the commander of HM Gunboat Hugh Rose ; correspondence from Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ; correspondence from the Viceroy; a request from Midhut Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , the Ottoman Governor at Baghdad for reparation over the incident; the British wish to avert the threat of Turkish interference in Bahrain; reports of the escape of Abdullah [Abdallah ibn Faisal ibn Turki Āl Sa‘ūd] from Lahsa [Hasa]; and reports of the expression by the Ruler of Bahrain of regret over the messenger's murder.
