This volume consists of a report by Arthur Malet, Secretary to the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. 's Political and Secret Department, on the East India Company's connection with Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. during the period 1646-1846.

Also included is a plan of the city of Bussorah [Basra] (f 38).

Arrangement

The main text is preceded by four indices under the following headings: 'Miscellaneous Information regarding Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. ' (ff 3-26), 'Appointments etc. in Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. Commencing with the year 1728' (ff 27-32), 'Salaries & Allowances at different periods of the Officers employed in Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. ' (ff 33-34), and 'Euphrates Expedition and Flotilla' (ff 35-36). Each entry in each index gives the year, followed by a few lines describing the corresponding summary in the main text, alongside the paragraph number of that summary and the page number(s). In the case of the first index, most but not all of the numbered paragraphs from the main text are listed; in the remaining three indices, only those paragraphs directly relating to the stated subject are included. It should also be noted that not all of the period 1646-1846 is covered in the précis; there are several significant gaps: 1664-1670, 1683-1707 and 1708-1719.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 351; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves.

Pagination: the file also contains an original handwritten pagination sequence.

The sequence includes two foliation anomalies, ff 140a and 141a.
