U ndertaking given by S heikh M uhammad of F ujairah on his R ecognition,
dated M arch 21, 1952
{a)
Letter from the Political Officer, Trucial States, to Shaikh Muhammad bin Hamad
al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, dated March 19, 1952—
I h av e been authorised by His Excellency the Political Resident to inform you
that Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland are willing to recognise you as Ruler of the Shaikhdom of
Fujairah under British protection, and to observe towards you the obligations
imposed on them by the agreements listed below, provided that, on behalf of your
self and your successors,
(i) You accept as binding the following engagements and treaties entered into
by the Shaikhs of the Trucial Oman Coast, of which I enclose copies:
{a) the General Treaty of 1820,
{b) the engagements entered into in 1847 and 1856 regarding the suppression
of the Slave trade,
(c) the Treaty of Peace in perpetuity agreed upon in 1853 and the additional
article appended to it in 1864 for the protection of telegraph lines and stations,
{d) the Agreement of 1879 concerning runaways,
(e) the Protectorate Treaties of 1892,
if) the Agreement of 1902 for the prohibition of the Arms Traffic.
(ii) You undertake that you will not grant any concession for the exploitation
of mineral resources except with the consent of Her Majesty's Government,
(iii) You undertake that you will not, without the consent of Her Majesty's
Government, grant any concession for fishing or pearling except to a trucial States
subject,
(iv) You will recognise the jurisdiction of Her Majesty's Government over the
persons and matters set out under Article 8 of the Trucial States Order in Council,
1950, of which a copy is attached,
(v) You will recognise the right of Her Majesty's Government to determine
the boundaries of the Shaikhdom of Fujairah, including the land and sea boundaries
and the boundaries of that part of the sea bed adjacent to the coast of Fujairah,
which is or which may in future be under the jurisdiction of yourself or your
successors,
(vi) Although you are at liberty to communicate freely with the other Rulers
under British protection in the Persian Gulf, you will recognise the right of Her
Majesty's Government to settle any disputes which may arise between you,
(vii) You will render to the Trucial Oman Levies such assistance as they may
require for the proper execution of their duties.
2. If you agree to the arrangements explained in this letter, I propose that
they should come into force when I receive your reply to that effect.

Translation of letter from Shaikh Muhammad bin Hamad of Fujairah to
the Political Officer, Trucial States, Sharjah, dated 21st March, 1952
I have received your letter No. 0210/28/52 with its enclosures. I have read
all these documents and understand them. I accept the conditions under which
Her Majesty's Government is willing to recognise me as the Ruler of the Shaikhdom
of Fujairah under British protection, on the condition that I am permitted, as far
as an oil concession is concerned, to address any Company whatsoever, and I agree
that the arrangements explained in your letter should come into force on your
receipt of this reply.
