3. By the time Khan Khudadad had succeeded to the chiefship of the
. ^ . Confederacy, the Gichkis had split into
Two divisions of Makrao. twQ main branches _ those of Pan j gur and
Kech. Khan Khudadad Khan had a different policy for each fraction. In
Kech Faqir Muhammad Bizan jo was his Naib. Having married the daughter
of the Kech Sardar and acquired much landed property there, he became a
permanent institution.
4. Owing to disorders in Panjgur the British Envoy at Kalat, Sir H.
^ fa v AT ., Green, in 1858, persuaded the Khan to
visit the country at the head of a levy of
the Sarawan and Jhalawan Chiefs. The Khan replaced Azam Khan, the then
Sardar of Panjgur by another of his family, Mir Isa, whom he made Naib as
well as Sardar. He also married Mir Isa’s daughter.
A few years after this the Khan appointed Mir Gajian, son of Azam Khan,
as Sardar and Naib and married his sister. Por 29 years’the struggle between
Mirs Isa and Gajian and their sons kept Panjgur in a ferment.
5. During the prolonged disturbances in Panjgur, the Nausherwanis of
Kharan came into prominence in Makran
Nausherwanis. affairs. %
In 1839 Khan Mehrab Khan of Kalat granted Azad Khan of Kharan half
the revenues of Khudabadan in Panjgur, the other half of which he had
inherited from a Gichki ancestress, in the hopes of obtaining his help against
the British. When Mehrab Khan was killed in the storming of Kalat by the
British, Aaad Khan gave asylum to his son Nasir Khan, and, on Nasir Khan’s
being elected to the Chiefship of the Confederacy, gave him his daughter in
marriage.
There was almost continuous enmity between Khan Khudadad Khan and
Azad Khan, but at one time the Khan, distracted by the feuds in Panjgur and
annoyed by the independence of Paqir Muhammad in Kech, proposed to farm
out the whole of Makran to Azad Khan. He was only disuaded from this by
the efforts of the British Agent. Affairs in Makran were still in this state
when Sandeman arrived in Mastung in 1876.
6. The Panjgur and Makran Sardars were summoned to Mastung by the
Proposal to settle Makran affairs in 1876. Khan to have their “ affairs arranged in
the same way as the affairs of the Sara*
wan and Jhalawan Sardarsw r ere being arranged”; and, at the Khan’s request,
Sandeman also wrote inviting them to come in.
Mir Gajian arrived in time to take part in the final discussions and accom
panied Sandeman and the Khan to Jacobabad and to the Imperial Assembly at
Delhi. The Kech Sardars were late, and, hearing that the Khan had started
for Jacobabad, turned back.
At Jacobabad the Khan asked Lord Lytton for Sandeman’s services to
settle Makran affairs, and in informing the Khan that Sandeman had been
appointed Agent to the Governor-General for Kalat and its dependencies, the
A ieeroy announced that—
“ in accordance with your previously expressed desire, Major Sandeman
on his return to Khelat is to proceed to Makran and Panjgur
for the purpose of settling, if possible, the affairs of that distant
portion of your territories’h ■'

Khan’s proposals regarding Panjgur. raided Panjgur. The Khan on his return
. . set about raising a tribal force to restore
Jqis Naib, but was stopped by the order of the Viceroy.
• n ^^ ai1 suggested that Sandeman on his proposed visit should
either leave a British Officer in Makran to keep the peace, or that the British
Government should take over the country on a quit-rent of Rs. 40,000.
8. The Afghan War prevented Sandeman’s visit to Makran, and in 1882
when Mir Mahmud Khan (the present Khan), son of Khan Khudadad, was on
