Cabul Diary from the \§th to the 21 ^ September 1871, inclusive.
The Turkish envoy, having waited on the Ameer in a private apartment,
represented as follows :
(-*-•) u is most desirable that you should depute an agent with a friendly
letter with me to Constantinople with a view to cementing friend
ship for the interests of the two Governments.
(2.) “ The affairs of Bokhara are in a very bad way; and, though I told the
king that, under all circumstances, it is unavoidable that he should
act in accordance with the wishes of the Russians, and that it would
he of little benefit to him to look for any aid from the Turkish
empire, still he has sent an agent with me, considering that this
action would tend to his good fame.
(3.)—“Naib Mahomed Alum Khan* belongs to the Sheea sect, and is not
* Governor of Toortistan. therefore on friendly terms with ‘ Soo-
nees. During the last Mohurrum
festival, he observed mournings and other formal ceremonies
against the will of the latter sect. Almost all the people in Toorkis-
tan are dissatisfied with him. You should transfer him to another

Usium Khan. Khan,f who has been placed in confine
ment with his brothers, is in reality almost an imbecile—destitute of
intellect. No anxiety can be felt as regards his conduct, whether
he he kept imprisoned or left free. You should be kind enough to
release him, or keep him separate from his brothers.’*
His Highness the Ameer remarked as follows :
“ It would have been suitable for me to send an agent with a letter to the
Turkish empire if I had been desired to do so, or if I had received a murra-
sulla regarding assistance being afforded to you in your journey through Afghan
istan ; but it is not becoming that I should take a prime action in this matter.
As regards the transfer of Naib Mahomed Alum Khan and the release of Sirdar
Mahomed Kasim Khan, I shall see about these points hereafter.”
Briefly, the representations of the envoy have not met the approval of the
Ameer. The envoy has been permitted to leave via Kurrum, and the khilluts
have been granted to him and the Bokhara envoy.
