I am desired to forward copy of political diary submitted by Mr.
It. B. Shaw, Joint Commissioner, Ladak, from the 30th July to the 5th
August 1871, inclusive.
Abstract of Intelligence.
Leh, 30/A July .—I received visits from many of the Toorkee and other
merchants. They complain of great difficulties in the way of trade from the
absence of a currency. Chilkee rupees, they say, are not taken by any one, and
there are no English rupees to be had. All"transactions are thus hampered,
and the purchase of daily necessaries made very difficult.
To-day I took the statements of the late Captain Basevi’s servants
and others regarding the circumstances of his death.
3r<i August. —Mr. Drew, the wazeer, after calling together an assembly
of the merchants, explained to them that for the future chilkee rupees would be
given and received at the Ladak Government Treasury at the rate of nine annas
each. Objections were raised by the merchants, but over-ruled.
Uh Received a visit from the Gyalpa or ex-Rajah of Ladak.
No news have yet been received from Toorkistan, or from the man who was
despatched nearly a month ago by Mr. Drew to obtain news.

In acknowledging the receipt of your letter dated the 25th ultimo,
No 322—978, enclosing copy of Mr. Shaw’s diary from the 30th July to the
5th idem, I am directed to request that His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor
will be so good as to consult with the Maharaja of Cashmere as to the best
mode of removing the inconvenience caused by the non-currency ot Ghiikee
rupees, and the absence of English rupees.
