272. Azim’s son, Surwur, and brother-in-law, Surfuraz Ghilzye, also
effected their escape into Toorkistan. The latter sought a reconciliation
Shore Ali, hut was refused, and soon found occasion for attempts to disturb his
rule.
273 Nusroollah Khan, Azim’s Governor of Jelallabad, also fled to
Baroo Another son of Azim, Mahsum Khan, made his escape in the direc
tion of Kohat. A third son, Abdool Azeez, with the brothers Ahmed Khan
Zuman Khan, and Oomur Khan, were seized by the people of Cabul and
taken before the Ameer.
274. Only three acts of severity were committed at first, and those as
usual were on persons of no great mark. Gholam Mahomed Khan, Populzye,
was shot on the 2nd September; the ears of Azim’s Pesh Khidmut (Private
Secretary) were cut off on the 11th September, and Shahbaz Khan, one of
Azim’s Generals, was hanged on the 18th.
275 . There were certain other of Azim’s influential partizans, and of the
Ameer’s dangerous relations, whose remo\al to some distant part was from the
very first thought necessary.
276. Shumsooddeen.—As he was related both to Shere Ali, Candaharee,
and Shere Ali, the Ameer, the latter determined to deal leniently, and com-
mitted the task of deporting him to Shalkote to Shere Ali, Candaharee (diary
ending 28th September). However, he went off of his own accord, and arriving
in Khelat in the beginning of November, claimed hospitality. The Government

but there was no necessity for the warning, for Shumsooddeen almost imme-

thence wrote to the Ameer asking for permission to return, and received the
reply, of which the following is an abstract translation:
u If J you are now in your proper senses and wish to return to Cabul, you may come back
Political Progs., September 1869, No. 167. and s P end y our life at home; but if you are still in
your former state, do what you think best. All is
right here, you may bring presents if you are able to do so.”
He then asked and received permission § from the Government of India to

278. Ine Ameers half brothers,— Ahmed, Znman, and Oomur Khan,—
whose subsequent history may best be told at once, though we are thereby
carried on into 1871. D
As early as the 21st September the Ameer was considering the propriety
o imprisoning or banishing these three Sirdars, as probable supporters of Azim
